How Much Physical Activity

Do you know what the recommended amount of physical activity for Canadians is?

  • Adults should be active for 150minutes/week
  • Children & youth should be active for 60 minutes/day
  • Toddlers (1-2yrs) & preschoolers (3-4yrs) should be active for 180 minutes/day
  • Infants should be physically active several times per day

Guidelines for Physical Activity

In Canada research has been ongoing to determine just how much physical activity is needed throughout the lifespan to be beneficial. Click on any of the age groups below to see the physical activity guidelines and sedentary behaviour guidelines for those ages. Newly published in 2016 for Children & Youth ages 5-17years are the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines which evaluates physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for that specific age group. Information Sheets

 

Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth

ParticipACTION, a national non-profit organization whose mission is to help Canadians sit less and move more, releases the Report Card annually. The 2016 ParticipACTION Report Card includes the new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth: An Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Sleep (the first of its kind globally and the first time it has assigned sleep a grade).
