Where can I find lower cost equipment?

Currently there are several Equipment Loaning Programs that are available to community members. These programs make accessing a variety of equipment easy so that residents can live more active lifestyles. Below is more information on current community equipment loaning programs:

Through the Healthy Kids Community Challenge, Sport Bags, Run, Jump, Play Packs and FitBits are available for individuals and groups to loan and use in the community.

  1. Sports BagsEquipment was purchased to fill 11 sports bags to provide families and neighbourhoods the equipment needed to play and utilize local parks. There are various sports bags to choose from: equipment for lacrosse, soccer, flag football, tennis, hockey, badminton, geocaching, and other activities. These bags are being housed at local community centres, and can be borrowed free of charge by staff, Neighbourhood Associations, or community groups to use for programs or special events.
  2. Run, Jump and Play Packs- In partnership with the Brantford Public Library, and the County of Brant Library, we created Run, Jump and Play Packs, each containing balls, a Frisbee, a skipping rope and a children’s book, to promote physical literacy. These packs can be borrowed from all Brantford - Brant library branches.
  3. FitBits – With the purchase of 150 FitBits, we have been able to encourage families to keep track of their movement in a day (ie. steps taken), and be a motivator to move more. In all, promoting good physical health, which consecutively supports good mental health. These FitBits have been distributed to Landsdowne Children’s Centre and Woodview Children’s Centre to be added to their lending libraries and incorporated into treatment plans for the children they serve, as well as added to both the City and County libraries catalogue of lending materials.

Grand River Community Health Centre’s (GRCHC) Physical Activity Community Educator (PACE) program also has a lending library available at the GRCHC main location on Colborne St, Brantford or at T.B. Costain Community Centre.

Many local sporting goods stores provide used equipment at a lower cost and ensure that the equipment is still in usable condition before selling it. Below is a list of local stores and their information that are known to stock and sell used equipment.

Some financial assistance programs also assist with the cost of equipment to participate in the sport. Canadian Tire Jumpstart is well known for providing subsidy for equipment, as well as program registration fees.
